The name of a sect of Shaivas (followers of Shiva) so called from wearing a representation of the linga (a symbol of Shiva). They reject the sanctity of the Brahmanical Order and the authority of the Vedas, and do not recognize caste distinctions. The sect originated in South India in the twelfth century, founded by Basava, the brother-in-law, chief minister, and general of Bijjala, a Kalachurya ruler and Jain, who usurped the Chalukya throne. Different sections of the Lingaits are called Pancham and Tirale. The Lingayat movement, founded by Basava, challenged traditional Hindu social structures and emphasized devotion to Shiva and social equality. It remains an influential religious and cultural force in parts of South India, particularly Karnataka.
