The Field Measurement Book (FMB) is an official land survey document maintained by the Tamil Nadu government that contains detailed sketches and measurements of land parcels. The government FMB service fails often: the page loads but the sketch never arrives, the captcha loops, or the server answers with an error for hours at a time. This page is built for exactly those hours. Every request walks three sources in order:

1. The state survey system, which holds the current sheet for every digitised survey number.
2. The CLIP land portal, the revenue department's own fallback for the same sketches.
3. What is the difference between FMB, patta and the village map?

The FMB sketch is the surveyed drawing of one survey number: shape, dimensions and neighbours. The patta is the revenue record of who holds it and how much land it carries. The village map is the whole village with every survey number in place, without dimensions. A purchase check reads all three: the patta for the holder and extent, the FMB to confirm that extent on the ground, and the EC for the registered history.

How do I read the measurements on an FMB sketch?

Older sheets are in chains and links (one chain is 66 feet, one link is 7.92 inches, a hundred links to the chain); resurveyed and urban sheets are in metres. The long line through the parcel is the G-line (base line) and the short perpendicular distances from it to each corner are the offsets, which is how the surveyor fixed the corners. My survey number is not found. What should I check?

First the district, taluk and village: the same survey number exists in every village. Then the sub-division: many survey numbers are held only as sub-divisions (1A1, 1A2 and so on), and when that is the case this page names the sub-divisions it holds so you can search again with one. After a resurvey the number may also have changed; the patta shows the current one.

What is the difference between rural and urban FMB?

Rural land is identified by village and survey number and its sketch comes from the Field Measurement Book. Town-surveyed areas (Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and other towns) are identified by town, ward, block and town survey number, and their sketch comes from the town survey records, alongside the TSLR extract. Choose Urban above for those.

Is an FMB sketch legally valid?

The Field Measurement Book is the survey department's official record and courts, registrars and banks rely on it for boundaries and extent. The sketch downloaded here is for reference and verification; for a proceeding that needs a certified copy, obtain it from the Tahsildar or survey office.
