Is this plot inside an ASI monument zone?

Under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958, as amended in 2010, no new construction is allowed within 100 m of a centrally protected monument (the prohibited area), and building between 100 m and 300 m (the regulated area) needs the competent authority's permission. This check measures from your plot's edge to the nearest protected monument in the Chennai region and says which band, if any, the plot is in.

Sign in with your phone to run it. You see the price and approve it before anything runs.

What the answer holds
  • Prohibited (0 to 100 m), regulated (100 to 300 m) or clear, with the monument and the distance
  • Measured from the plot boundary where the parcel is mapped
  • The severe layers (monument buffers, reserve forest, Ramsar wetland, swamp, flood, water bodies, the Redhills catchment) swept at the same pin, shown only if they hit

The basics

Monument zones, briefly

The prohibited area is the 100 m around the limits of a monument the Archaeological Survey of India protects; the regulated area is the next 200 m, out to 300 m. Both were set by the AMASR (Amendment and Validation) Act, 2010.

Prohibited
0 to 100 m

No new construction. Repair or renovation of an existing building needs permission. Shown as Restricted.

Regulated
100 to 300 m

Building, repair and renovation need the competent authority's permission on the National Monuments Authority's advice. Shown as flagged.

Covered
Chennai region

The layer holds the protected monuments of the Chennai region. Elsewhere in Tamil Nadu it has nothing to measure against.

How it works

How to check the ASI zone of a plot

  1. 1

Place the pin on the plot

Tap the plot on the map, paste a Google Maps link to it, or use your location while you stand on it.

  2. 2

    Press Run

The survey parcel under the pin is found, and the distance from its edge to the nearest protected monument is measured.

  3. 3

    Read the band

Prohibited, regulated or beyond 300 m, with the monument's name. Take a flagged result to the competent authority before any plan is drawn.

Where it helps

When it helps with land

Near a temple town

Old temples, forts and rock-cut caves around Chennai are centrally protected. A plot a street away can fall inside 300 m.

Before a building plan

In the regulated area the permission comes before the planning approval, so find out first.

An existing house

In the prohibited area even a repair needs permission, which shapes what an old house is worth to a buyer.

Worth knowing

The monument layer covers the Chennai region only. Outside it, a clear answer means the layer holds nothing there, not that no protected monument is near; check with the Archaeological Survey of India circle office. State-protected monuments are not in this layer.

Questions

Questions people ask

What is an ASI zone?

The ground around a centrally protected monument where building is controlled: the prohibited area, 0 to 100 m from the monument's limits, and the regulated area, 100 to 300 m, under the AMASR Act, 1958 as amended in 2010.

What is the prohibited area around an ASI monument?

The 100 m around the protected limits of the monument. No new construction is allowed in it; repair or renovation of an existing building needs the competent authority's permission.

What is the regulated area around an ASI monument?

The band from 100 m to 300 m. Construction, repair and renovation there need permission from the competent authority, which acts on the National Monuments Authority's recommendation and may limit height and design.

How do I get an ASI NOC for construction?

Apply to the competent authority for permission, with the site plan, the building plan and the plot's distance from the monument; the National Monuments Authority considers the application and recommends. No permission is given for new construction in the prohibited area.

What is the penalty for building in the prohibited area?

Under the AMASR Act, imprisonment of up to 2 years, a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh, or both.

Is there an ASI zone map for my area?

This check reads the protected monument boundaries of the Chennai region and measures from your plot's edge. Elsewhere in Tamil Nadu the layer holds no monuments, so ask the Archaeological Survey of India circle office.

How is it charged?

1 credit per pin, charged only when the layer gives a real answer. If the read fails, nothing is charged.
