The land record, briefly
A patta is the Tamil Nadu revenue record that names who the government has recorded as holding a survey number, with its extent, land class and tax.

When it helps with land
Before you buy
Check that the seller is the recorded holder of the exact survey and sub-division in the sale deed.
After a patta transfer
See whether the new name has reached the register after a sale, a partition or an inheritance.
A split survey
The subdivision list shows whether the survey has been divided, so a parent number is not mistaken for one plot.
A patta records who holds land for revenue purposes. It does not prove title. Read it with the encumbrance certificate and the parent deeds before any money moves.

How do I view patta chitta online?
Choose the district, taluk and village above, type the survey number with its sub-division, and press Run. The live record from the revenue register comes back with the holders, the patta number and the parcel on a map.
What is the difference between patta, chitta and A-register?
The patta names the holder and lists the surveys under one patta number. The chitta is the holder-wise abstract with extents and land class. The A-register is the survey-wise register with the same detail. All three are views of the same revenue record.
What is TSLR?
TSLR is the Town Survey Land Register, the revenue record for land inside a town survey area. A TSLR extract is the town equivalent of the patta for village land.
Why does a town survey need a ward and block?
Inside a town the survey number is unique only within a block, so the same number exists in many blocks with different holders. The ward and block pin the right one.
Is this the latest record?
The record is fetched live from the revenue register when you run it. If the portal is down, the register copy is used and the answer says so.
I only have the patta number, not the survey number.

Can I download the patta as a PDF?
Yes. For village land the PDF is the revenue department's own patta copy, digitally signed by the Tahsildar, with the reference number printed on it for checking at eservices.tn.gov.in. Where the department gives no copy for that patta, and for a town TSLR, the PDF is our print of the record, named as ours.
Does a patta prove who owns the land?
No. It is a revenue record of who holds the land, and strong supporting evidence, but ownership comes from the chain of registered deeds. Check the encumbrance certificate too.
What does it cost?
The price is shown above before you run it. It is charged only when the record comes back, and the subdivision list and the plain-words reading come with it, so a survey the register does not hold is not charged.
