Every printed land certificate carries a barcode whose payload only the register can produce. Decrypting it back into a record is a real authenticity check on the paper.

Charged when the register answers, whether it holds a record or not: a clear answer is the answer. You see your balance before you approve, and only a search that fails is not charged.
Compare the returned record against what is printed. A mismatch in owner, extent or classification matters more than the check itself. A reference number check confirms the parcel, not the paper.

Questions people ask
Short answers, no jargon.
Nothing came back. Is my patta fake?
No, and we will not say that. The portal returns nothing for anything it cannot decrypt, which includes newer or re-keyed barcode series. Confirm the certificate at the issuing taluk office.
What is the difference between the barcode and the reference check?
The barcode carries an encrypted payload only the register can make, so decrypting it says the paper came from the register. A reference number is just a number printed on the page: looking it up confirms what the register holds for that parcel, not that this paper is genuine.
My rural certificate reference returns nothing.
A rural reference number records the application, not the parcel, so nobody can resolve it to land. Use the code under the QR instead.
