How far is my plot from the railway line?

The check measures from your plot boundary to the nearest mapped railway line and places it in one of four bands: protection zone (0 to 30 m), impact zone (30 to 50 m), caution zone (50 to 100 m) or clear beyond 100 m. Inside 30 m, building needs the railway's no objection, so that band is shown as Restricted.

What the answer holds
  • The distance to the nearest railway line from the plot boundary
  • Protection (0 to 30 m), impact (30 to 50 m) and caution (50 to 100 m) bands
  • The severe layers (monument buffers, reserve forest, Ramsar wetland, swamp, flood, water bodies, the Redhills catchment) swept at the same pin, shown only if they hit

1 creditper run, charged when the register answers

What we need

One thing at a time. Fill it in and press Run.

Drop a pin, paste a Google Maps link, or use your location.

No pin yet. Tap the land, paste a link, or use your location.

You will see the price and your balance before it runs.

The answer

From the register, with its date and source.

Nothing run yet. The answer appears here with everything this mini adds:

  • The distance to the nearest railway line from the plot boundary
  • Protection (0 to 30 m), impact (30 to 50 m) and caution (50 to 100 m) bands
  • The severe layers (monument buffers, reserve forest, Ramsar wetland, swamp, flood, water bodies, the Redhills catchment) swept at the same pin, shown only if they hit
The basics

Railway distance, briefly

The railway protection zone is the strip within 30 m of a railway line where permanent construction needs a no objection certificate from the railway, obtained through the Divisional Railway Manager's office.

Protection zone
0 to 30 m

Building needs the railway's no objection. Shown as Restricted.

Impact and caution
30 to 100 m

Impact zone to 50 m and caution zone to 100 m, where train noise and vibration are felt. Shown as Flagged.

Measured from
The plot boundary

The survey parcel under the pin is located first, so the nearest edge of the plot is measured, not a point in its middle.

How it works

How to check the distance from a railway line to a plot

  1. 1

    Place the pin

Tap the plot on the map, paste a Google Maps link to it, or use your location while you stand there.

  2. 2

    Press Run

The survey parcel under the pin is found and the distance from its boundary to the nearest mapped railway line is measured.

  3. 3

    Read the band

Restricted within 30 m, Flagged from 30 to 100 m, Clear beyond 100 m, each with the distance and the line where it is named.

Where it helps

When it helps with land

Plots beside the track

Land along a suburban line is often cheaper for a reason. Know whether you need a railway NOC before you pay.

Planning a house

Within 100 m, plan for noise and vibration: bedrooms away from the track, solid walls, better windows.

Checking a seller's claim

"Far from the railway" is easy to say. The distance from the plot boundary settles it.

Worth knowing

The bands are a guide to what the railway and the planning authority will ask; the railway division decides on a NOC. A line built after the map was drawn will not show. Price: 1 credit per pin, charged only when the layer gives a real answer.

Questions

Questions people ask

What is the railway protection zone?

The strip within 30 m of a railway line. Permanent construction there needs a no objection certificate from the railway, so this check shows it as Restricted.

Can I build a house near a railway line?

Beyond 30 m, yes, with the usual approvals, though within 100 m you will hear and feel the trains. Within 30 m you first need the railway's no objection.

How do I get a railway NOC for construction?

Apply to the Divisional Railway Manager's office of the railway division with the building plan, the ownership documents and a site plan showing the distance from the line.

What are the impact and caution zones?

The impact zone runs from 30 to 50 m and the caution zone from 50 to 100 m. Neither bars building, but noise and vibration are felt there, so both are shown as Flagged.

How is the distance measured?

From the boundary of the survey parcel under the pin to the nearest mapped railway line. Where no parcel is mapped, it is measured from the pin.

How much does it cost?

1 credit per pin, charged only when the layer gives a real answer. A failed read is not charged. The free finder page stays available.
