What is a slum area under Tamil Nadu law?
An area the Government has declared to be one by notification under section 3 of the Tamil Nadu Slum Areas (Improvement and Clearance) Act, 1971. Under section 5(1) building there can need the authority's written permission, and section 29 bars eviction of an occupant without it. The board is now the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board, renamed from the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board in 2021.
