What is DIGIPIN?

DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) is India's revolutionary geo-coded addressing system that assigns a unique 10-character alphanumeric code to every 4m × 4m area in the country.

Pinpoint Accuracy

Each DIGIPIN represents a specific 4-meter by 4-meter grid, providing unprecedented location accuracy compared to traditional 6-digit PIN codes.

Complete Coverage

Covers all of India including remote areas, forests, water bodies, and maritime zones up to 200 nautical miles from the coastline.

Open Source

Developed by India Post with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO, DIGIPIN is open-source and available for integration into any application.

Understanding India's DIGIPIN System

What is DIGIPIN?

DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) is a groundbreaking digital addressing system launched by the Department of Posts, Government of India. It represents a significant leap in India's digital infrastructure by providing a standardized, geo-coded addressing system that assigns a unique 10-character alphanumeric code to every 4-meter by 4-meter area across the country.

Developed in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO's National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), DIGIPIN is designed to complement, not replace, the existing 6-digit PIN code system. While traditional PIN codes cover broad geographical areas, DIGIPIN provides precise location identification down to a 16 square meter grid.

How DIGIPIN Works

DIGIPIN uses the EPSG:4326 (WGS84) coordinate reference system to divide India's geographical territory into uniform grids. Each grid is assigned a unique code based on its latitude and longitude coordinates. The system covers:

  • Latitudes from 2.5°N to 38.5°N
  • Longitudes from 63.5°E to 99.5°E
  • India's entire mainland and maritime Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)
  • Remote areas, forests, water bodies, and even locations at sea

The 10-character code uses 16 alphanumeric symbols: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, C, J, K, L, M, P, F, T. The code is structured hierarchically through 10 levels of 4×4 grid subdivisions, providing increasing precision at each level.

Key Benefits of DIGIPIN
  • Enhanced Delivery Accuracy: E-commerce and logistics companies can deliver to exact locations, reducing failed deliveries and improving customer satisfaction.
  • Emergency Response: Emergency services can reach precise locations quickly, especially crucial in disaster-prone or remote areas.
  • Rural Addressing: Provides standardized addresses for rural and underdeveloped areas where traditional addressing is inadequate.
  • Navigation Integration: Can be integrated with GPS navigation systems for accurate routing and location services.
  • Government Services: Enables efficient delivery of government services and benefits to citizens at their exact locations.
  • Maritime Applications: Addresses can be assigned to offshore installations, vessels, and maritime assets.
Technical Implementation

DIGIPIN is built as an open-source system with the following technical features:

  • Hierarchical Grid System: 10 levels of 4×4 grid subdivisions
  • Alphanumeric Encoding: 10-character code in format XXX-XXX-XXXX
  • Offline Capability: Can be generated and decoded without internet connectivity
  • API Support: RESTful APIs available for encoding and decoding
  • Open Source: Source code available on GitHub for integration
  • Permanent Infrastructure: Independent of land use changes or administrative boundaries
How to Use DIGIPIN

Using the DIGIPIN system is straightforward:

  • Find Your DIGIPIN: Use this tool to find the DIGIPIN for any location by clicking on the map or entering coordinates.
  • Share Your DIGIPIN: Share the 10-character code with delivery services, emergency responders, or anyone who needs your precise location.
  • Format: DIGIPIN follows the format XXX-XXX-XXXX with hyphens for easy readability.
  • Integration: Developers can integrate DIGIPIN into their applications using the open-source libraries.
Future of Digital Addressing

DIGIPIN is part of India's broader National Geospatial Policy 2022 and the DHRUVA (Digital Hub for Reference and Unique Virtual Address) initiative. As the system matures, it's expected to:

  • Become integrated with major e-commerce and delivery platforms
  • Support advanced features like indoor navigation and 3D addressing
  • Enable new location-based services and applications
  • Facilitate smart city initiatives and urban planning
  • Enhance disaster management and emergency response systems
Privacy and Security

DIGIPIN is designed with privacy in mind. The system doesn't store personal information - it simply provides a standardized way to reference geographic locations. Users have complete control over when and with whom they share their DIGIPIN codes.

Important Note

DIGIPIN has been officially launched by India Post and is available for public use. The system provides a permanent digital infrastructure that remains unchanged regardless of changes in land use, road networks, or administrative boundaries.
