ASI Protected Monuments are ancient and historical monuments, archaeological sites and remains declared to be of national importance under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958 (AMASR Act). Understanding ASI Protection Zones
The AMASR (Amendment and Validation) Act, 2010 established specific zones around protected monuments:
Protected Monument Area
The monument itself and its immediate surroundings as notified by ASI.
- No construction or modification of any kind permitted
- Only conservation activities by ASI allowed
- Any unauthorized activity is punishable under the Act
- Imprisonment up to 2 years and/or fine up to Rs. 1 lakh
Prohibited Zone (0-100 meters)
Area extending 100 meters from the protected boundary in all directions.
- All new constructions are completely banned
- No alteration of existing buildings allowed
- Residents cannot construct, reconstruct, or alter houses
- No mining, quarrying, or excavation activities
- No large-scale industrial or commercial activities
Only Permitted:
- Repairs for safety/structural stability (with ASI approval)
- Continuation of existing residential use
- Small-scale traditional activities
Regulated Zone (100-300 meters)
Area from 100m to 300m from the protected boundary.
- Construction possible with NMA permission
- Requires No Objection Certificate (NOC) from National Monument Authority
- Building height restrictions may apply

National Monument Authority (NMA)
