Patta Application Status & Patta Transfer Status Check 2026

Two different questions

"Patta status" means one of two things. Either you applied for something (a transfer after a sale, a name change after inheritance, a sub-division, a correction) and want to know where that application stands, or you want to know what the register says about a survey number right now. The first is answered by the application status page of the state portal with your reference number. The second is answered by the register itself, and that is the check that actually matters: a transfer is complete only when the register shows the new name.

How to check patta application status

1. Find the reference or application number on the acknowledgement you were given at the e-Sevai centre or by the online application
2. Open the application status page on the state's land records portal (Tamil Nilam) and enter that number
3. Read the stage shown. A patta transfer normally passes through the village administrative officer's enquiry and report, the revenue inspector's verification, and the Tahsildar's order, after which the patta is issued in the new name
4. If the stage has not changed for a long time, take the acknowledgement to the taluk office and ask for the file; the enquiry stage is where applications most often wait, usually because a document is missing or a neighbour's objection is pending

Patta transfer status after a registered sale

Registering a sale deed at the sub-registrar office does not change the patta. The buyer has to apply for patta transfer separately, with the registered deed, the encumbrance certificate and identity proof. Until the Tahsildar passes the order, the register still shows the seller, and any patta printed in the meantime will carry the seller's name. That is why a buyer who checks the patta a few weeks after registration and still sees the old name has not necessarily found a problem; the transfer is simply pending. Check the application status first, then the register.

Confirm the result on the register

Whatever the status page says, the register is the proof. On the Patta Chitta Online tool, choose the district, taluk and village, enter the survey number and sub-division, and read the holder's name shown today. When the new name appears with the correct extent, the transfer is done; download the PDF and keep it. The same lookup shows a sub-division once the new sub-division number exists, and a correction once the corrected entry is in the register.

When the status is stuck or wrong

• No movement for weeks: visit the taluk office with the acknowledgement and the registered deed and ask which stage the file is at
• Rejected: the order states the reason; most rejections are a missing document, a mismatch between the deed and the register, or a pending objection, and a fresh application with the gap closed is usually accepted
• Transferred but with an error: a misspelt name or a wrong extent is fixed through a correction application, not a fresh transfer
• Transferred to the wrong person: that is a dispute, and it goes to the revenue divisional officer or the court, with the encumbrance certificate and the chain of deeds as evidence
