DIGIPIN API: encode and decode India Post digital addresses
Yes. The LandLens DIGIPIN API encodes a latitude and longitude anywhere in India into its India Post DIGIPIN, the official 10-character digital address of a square about 4 metres across, and decodes a DIGIPIN back to the centre of that square and its edges. Either way the answer also carries the pincode and post office of the spot. It costs nothing.

A real answer from the API (22 Oct 2026).
What it returns
One call, one code. found is false (status not_found) for a point outside India or a code that is not a valid DIGIPIN.
| Field | What it holds |
|---|---|
digipin | The code in its usual form, three, three and four characters, e.g. 4T3-588-4JK8. |
lat, lng | The point sent (encode), or the centre of the cell (decode). |
bounds | The edges of the cell the code names: south, west, north, east, so a map can draw the square. |
precision | What the code identifies: a 4 m by 4 m square, or its centre when decoded. |
decoded | true when a code was decoded. |
pincode, post_office, office_type, postal_division | The postal pincode and post office of the spot, where the postal maps hold it. |
Ways to call it
Send a point to encode it, or a code to decode it.
Encode
A latitude and longitude to its DIGIPIN.
{"lat": 12.901,"lng": 80.2279}
Decode
A DIGIPIN, with or without hyphens, to its point.
{"code": "4T3-588-4JK8"}
Inputs
The JSON body of the POST is the arguments. lat and lng, or code. When a code is sent, it is decoded.
| Argument | Type | What to send |
|---|---|---|
lat |
number | Latitude in decimal degrees, to encode. |
lng |
number | Longitude in decimal degrees, to encode. |
code |
string | A DIGIPIN to decode, with or without hyphens. |
Code
Set LANDLENS_KEY to your key. In an AI app, connect https://verified.realestate/mcp once and ask in plain words instead. In Postman, download this API's collection, import it (File, Import) and set apiKey.
curl -X POST https://verified.realestate/api/v1/tools/digipin \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $LANDLENS_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"lat":12.901,"lng":80.2279}'
import os, requests
r = requests.post(
"https://verified.realestate/api/v1/tools/digipin",
headers={"Authorization": f"Bearer {os.environ['LANDLENS_KEY']}"},
json={
"lat": 12.901,
"lng": 80.2279
},
timeout=20,
)
body = r.json()
print(body["status"], body["credits_charged"], body["data"])
const res = await fetch("https://verified.realestate/api/v1/tools/digipin", {
method: "POST",
headers: {
Authorization: `Bearer ${process.env.LANDLENS_KEY}`,
"Content-Type": "application/json",
},
body: JSON.stringify({
"lat": 12.901,
"lng": 80.2279
}),
});
const body = await res.json();
console.log(body.status, body.credits_charged, body.data);
What is the DIGIPIN of my plot at 12.9010, 80.2279?
Your AI works out the DIGIPIN and adds the pincode. It is free.
Responses
Every answer has the same envelope. What status can say for this call:
| status | What it means |
|---|---|
ok | The code or the point was worked out. |
not_found | The point is outside India, the code is not 10 valid characters, or neither was sent. error says which. |
free_limit_reached | The account has used its free calls for the hour or the day. retry_after says how many seconds to wait; paid calls keep working. |
Where the data comes from
India Post's DIGIPIN, a national grid that divides India into ten nested levels of four by four cells, each named by one character. The pincode comes from the India Post boundary maps.
Every point in India within the DIGIPIN extent.
The code is computed from the coordinate by the published DIGIPIN method, so it never goes stale. The pincode is read from our copy of the India Post boundaries.
Encoding walks the ten grid levels for the point; decoding walks them back for the code and returns the centre and the four edges of the last cell. Hyphens in a code are optional.
Who uses it
Property platforms
Give every listing its DIGIPIN, so a buyer can share the exact spot without a map link.
Document drafting
Add the DIGIPIN to a deed schedule or agreement beside the survey number and the address.
Site visits
Decode the DIGIPIN a client sends into a point to navigate to.
Limits and good practice
- A DIGIPIN names a square about 4 m across, not a property. A plot covers many codes; the one for its gate or centre is the usual choice.
- The pincode is a best effort. When the postal maps hold no pincode for the spot, the code is returned alone.
Pricing
The DIGIPIN API costs nothing. Free calls have their own allowance per hour and per day. Credits come from the same LandLens wallet as the chat and the minis. How billing works.
Free calls have an hourly and daily allowance. For more than that, or a platform built on these registers, we set up limits and a plan to match.
Questions
Is there a DIGIPIN API?
Yes, this one. Send lat and lng to get the DIGIPIN, or send a code to get its point back, over plain HTTPS or as an MCP tool.
What is a DIGIPIN?
India Post's digital address: a 10-character code for a square about 4 metres across, anywhere in India, worked out from the coordinate alone.
Is a DIGIPIN the same as a pincode?
No. A pincode is a delivery area of many square kilometres; a DIGIPIN is one 4 m square. The answer gives both.
What does it cost?
It costs nothing, within the account's free call allowance.
